Our focus is supporting a sustainable food system by providing urban residents access to local, seasonal, and sustainably raised foods from small regional farmers. Local vs. GlobalA great explanation from SustainableTable.org:At its roots sustainable farming benefits the local community and local economy while supporting the environment by enriching the soil, protecting air and water quality, and minimizing energy consumption. Industrial food production is entirely dependent on fossil fuels, which, when refined and burned, create greenhouse gases that are significant contributors to climate change. The biggest part of fossil fuel use in industrial farming is not transporting food or fueling machinery; it's chemicals. As much as forty percent of the energy used in the food system goes towards the production of chemical fertilizers and pesticides.By adding transportation, processing and packaging to the food system equation, the fossil fuel and energy use of our current food system puts tremendous stress on the environment. For example, between production and transportation, growing 10% more produce for local consumption in Iowa would result in an annual savings ranging from 280,000 to 346,000 gallons of fuel, and an annual reduction in CO2 emissions ranging from 6.7 to 7.9 million pounds.Food processors also use a large amount of paper and plastic packaging to keep fresh food from spoiling as it is transported and stored for long periods of time. This packaging is difficult or impossible to reuse or recycle. In addition, industrial farms are a major source of air and water pollution.Small, local farms are run by farmers who live on their land and work hard to preserve it. They protect open spaces by keeping land in agricultural use and preserve natural habitats by maintaining forest and wetlands. By being good stewards of the land, seeking out local markets, minimizing packaging, and harvesting food only when it is ready to consume, farmers can significantly reduce their environmental impact. In fact, studies show that sustainable agricultural practices can actually increase food production by up to 79% while at the same time actively reducing the effects of farming on climate change through carbon sequestration.

ABOUT US

Urban Table was developed while shopping at local farmers' markets. We appreciate the traditional farmers' market and traditional eating values. We understand that knowing where your food comes from is key to developing better eating habits and a healthy lifestyle. We strongly believe the importance of building relationships by creating open-air markets that connect rural farmers to urban communities, and by offering a healthier alternative to the sterile environments created by industrialized supermarkets. Recognizing the positive impacts that shopping at a farmers' market has on the environment, we hope to inspire families and communities to learn healthy habits and value local, organic, and sustainable farming practices.

Farhana is a certified Hollistic Nutrition Educator with a passion for improving overall health through a diet of high quality foods. She believes farmers' markets play a vital role in whole food nutrition and should be a routine part of any healthy lifestyle. Her hope is that her work with Urban Table will help in encouraging individuals to replace processed foods with fresh, local, and organic whole foods. She is thrilled to be a key member of Urban Table, an exceptional organization that provides access to some of the healthiest foods around!

Ysabel Academia

Ysabel has recently received her BSBA in Decision Sciences. She is currently studying Public Administration with a concentration in Nonprofit Management. She is excited to be part of nonprofit organizations like Urban Table where she expresses her entrepreneurial drive and passion for social work, health, and sustainability. She believes that local farmers' markets are the fundamental root of business sustainability where equity, economy, and ecology meet, not to mention the best spot to find the juiciest local strawberries and freshest all natural desserts all in one place!

Kurtis Wu

Kurtis has been proactive in the farmers' market industry for about 5 years. He has worked closely with farmers, open air organizers, as well as the San Francisco Environment Department promoting farmers' markets, small farms, and local green businesses. He passionately believes in the positive impacts of local food production/consumption with less carbon footprint. With Urban Table, he hopes to do his part in contributing to healthier and greener lifestlyles. After all, a healthy diet equals a healthy planet!
